Personality:
Generally speaking, Tsering is friendly and relaxed. He enjoys talking to others and liked to mess around if he gets the chance. He tends to get really obsessed over specific things and when he does, gets very motivated and excited about doing them. The best way to get him on your side is to make him interested in what you're doing, something that can be hard due to his lazy nature and pessimistic attitude. If it sounds boring, too much hassle or just plain dangerous, you'll be pushing and pulling him all the way. Tsering is lazy and dislikes putting effort into most things. If given a task, he normally performs it half heartedly, resulting in him having to go back and put double the effort in later. Tsering is prone to complaining if forced to do something and will find a way to get out of it if possible. A strong pessimist, he is able to come up with the worst scenario for any situation if he wants to avoid a situation strong enough.
Tsering suffers from hyposomnia and spends half his day feeling sleepy and tired. He tends to sleep for long hours anyway and can be hard pushed to wake up, especially considering he is a heavy snorer. He sometimes sleep walks and airbends in his sleep, which normally ends up with him awakening outside in a bush. Due to the training he has had, Tsering is at least relatively coordinated and pretty hard to trip up. He excels at sports which require high coordination, able to dodge around opponents more easily than others might. His favourite activity is gliding and it's the one thing he really likes utilising his bending for. Otherwise, he only trains when he has to and only to the minimum level needed to pass.
Having grown up in an Air Temple, Tsering has taken on the common belief in living peacefully and in balance. He greatly enjoys taking a meditation once or more a day, claiming it's for spiritual balance though just as often it is his laziness poking through. He is a vegan and refuses to eat or use anything that has come from an animal source whenever possible. Tsering wants to minimise the amount of things he hurts during his existence as much as possible and believes that by eating only plants, the lowest amount of life will be taken to fuel his own. He also avoids alcohol and drugs. Tsering is also a strong pacifist, being against fighting and is very reluctant to enter situations where he might have to. Aside from the effort of fighting, he is afraid of getting injured and doesn't like being in situations where he has to dodge blows. He's particularly afraid of blood and will faint at the sight of it.
Appearance:
Tsering is short and thin, with a pale complexion. He has some muscles to him, but a lack of practise means he's not quite as toned as a more dedicated air bender would be. What muscle bulk he does have is more for speed and agility than any show of strength, fitting with the airbending style. Like all air benders, Tsering dresses normally in the signature monk robes. These consist of a pair of baggy, dark brown pantaloons tied around the waist with cord, a yellow woven, long sleeved shirt and a bright orange poncho which sits around the shoulders. On his feet, he wears dark brown shoes also made of stiff fabric, allowing for flexibility.
Tsering's head is shaved bald though he has yet to gain the signature arrows along his scalp, back, arms and legs. Occasionally, normally when away from the temple, he allows his hair to grow a little. When it does, it's dark brown in colour and straight. He normally finds it itchy and shaves it off again after a while, when he feels like it. His face is round with a pointed chin, giving the impression of a turnip when combined with his bald head. Having not quite lost the puppy fat in his cheeks, he still looks childish and permanently sleepy, with droopy eyes that are normally half lidded. His eyes are his best feature, a very bright leafy green, and tend to be very expressive when he's actually excited about something. Despite his excessive sleep habits, he still has dark rings under his eyes.
History:
Tsering was born in the Western Air Temple, hidden within the Fire Nation Archipelago. For five years, he grew up surrounded by female air benders and grew used to the strict discipline and spirituality of being an air monk. During this period, he trained well and hard, wanting to impress his mother and the other air benders. He wasn't the best airbender in the world at first, performing poorly compared to some of the others, but he did his best and built up the coordination and speed needed to complete the tasks correctly.
When he turned five, it was suggested that he move to a male Air Temple to begin training with male monks, as was tradition. Normally, male Air Bending children would be sent from the Western to the closer Southern Temple, but due to a large influx, it was suggested Tsering go to the Northern Air Temple instead. Tsering was rather vocally opposed to this, abandoning his studies and clinging to his mother whenever he could. Of course, this behaviour only made it seem more necessary that he study in a different environment and Tsering was forced to go to the Northern Air Temple.
Tsering's approach to Air bending became sullen and avoidant. He often skipped classes to go and practise gliding, one of the activities he enjoyed the most, as well as playing various games with earth bending children in the nearby villages. He did learn his lessons, but only to a point where he'd be left alone. As he grew older, his avoidant behaviour grew stronger and became reinforced by the air nomad philosophies of peace and avoiding fighting. Why, he questioned, should he learn to fight if the whole point of being an air monk was to avoid it and live peacefully? It seemed like the biggest waste of time.
And so, Tsering reached 15 with only novice air bending abilities. It had become imperative that he begin to properly learn, so in an attempt to alter his mental states, the head monk declared that Tsering should travel on foot to the Southern Air Temple to recommence his training there, hoping that his experiences of the 'real' world outside the temple would sharpen his understanding about why it is important to learn those skills, if only for self defence purposes. Of course, Tsering agreed, relishing the opportunity to chill out away from the temple. He'd go to the Southern Air Temple eventually, but maybe he'd take a few detours along the way..
